We made some new frames recently. 80s BMX racing legend Garth Carnel ordered our first cruiser frame. We are very happy with the way it turned out for our first attempt at cruisers. Watch out for our racing frames this year. They are going to be sick.
We are also going to finally have some fixed gear bikes done soon. They will be available as a frame and forkset. Look out!!!

There was a rad session at Potato trails(Houtbay) this weekend. Salvo Freestyle Pros Malcolm Peters and David Rigby was present. It was windy but there was still gaps in the wind to get shit done. Wayne Reiche also showed us his new bike. Photos coming soon to this blog and the Salvobikes website. Wayne also took some photos of all the action that went down. See below. The trampoline bike also had some abuse dished out by all. The trails also has a neat little pump track to test your "flow" skills. It definitely gives one a proper work out. Johnty and Nic did an awesome job this year to get the place built up. Thanks for letting us ride your hard work and lets hope summer does not take it's toll too much.TM

Sneak peak at the Freestyle frame for 2012

Here is a sneak peak at the new Salvo "the Freestyle" frame for 2012. We will have a proper Bike check with full specs soon but for now you can have a look here.

The Load-down on the "Freestyle" frame
Our design strategy completely changed from last year. Last year we wanted to build the lightest freestyle frame possible. The lightweight frames definitely helped our team riders progress really fast. They won and placed on top of almost all big contests in South Africa. For 2012 we wanted to shift the focus from the best possible balance between strength and weight.
It is now clear that all bmx frame builders have found the perfect balance between weight and strength for 2012. Most frames are back to +-5 pounds VS +- 4 pounds.
For rider input we turned to one of SA's toughest and hardest riders Wayne Reiche. Wayne rides everything. Street, trails and park. So it is fitting to say that we get one of the toughest dudes to help build the toughest bmx frame we made so far. Wayne gave us input into the geometry and we are pleased to say that it turned out much better than what we were hoping for. With Gerrie's styling combined with Waynes geometry the frame turned out be a real LOOKER.
So now all we need to know is how it holds up and if it rides as well we hope. Keep checking into Salvobmx.blogpost.com for updates from Wayne.
We handed over the frame to Wayne last week and we cant wait to see what it looks like with all his components.

The new trails and racing frame for 2012 will be called "The Boneshaker". They will only be built on demand so you need to email us if you want one. trackframes@gmail.com .They are going for R3500 for the frame only. The purpose is solely for trails and racing.

The improvements from last year's "First Fire" frame are tapered rear stays, closed off female dropouts, gussets on top tube, Double butted down tube, overextended seat stays to top tube. Double bend chain stays. We are very excited about the outcome of this bike. Check back soon as we build it up the next couple of days.

Salvo 2012 Frames

Salvo has plans to build more frames in 2012. We are now building frames in house and not outsourcing it to engineering shops anymore. Tooling was acquired, jigs refined and the best 4130 known to man(USA grade) was ordered.
Plans for 2012 frames:
1. Trails frame
2. Build a bomb proof Freestyle frame with the help of Wayne Reiche. This time all out focus on strength and less on weight.
3. Racing frames. 3 sizes. Possibly a cruiser as well. We are talking to some older dad racers.
We will not carry too many "ex stock". We will build them on demand only.

Interbike in Las Vegas

I have been reading internet posts from Interbike the last weekend and there seems to be trends that all the bike and part makers are following. Here are some of my observations:
1. Frames are bulking up. There needs to be balance between strength and weight. Bikes are going from 4 pounds to 5 pounds.
2. Seems seat tubes are getting longer. No more scooter looking bikes.
3. Rear ends are also getting longer.
4. BRAKES!!! Everybody is selling brakes again. Good golly! It's safe to say it is making a come back.
5. Not many 9 inch Plus rise bars. Lets hope and pray this is a short lived trend.
6. Colours seems more normal. Not these stupid overkill brights and fluorescent colours.

Apart from all these trends everything people were showing looked the same. Everyone's plastic pedals, Everyone's 25t Sprockets, Everyone's pivotal seats.

One thing for sure is people are going to want
1. Tree's new seat.
2. The new "& forks" forks

This is the first Salvo Freestyle (MP) frame made with the lower stand over height.

Materials: USA Aircraft Grade 4130 Chromoly(The best money can buy). Post Weld
heat treated. Weight=4.68 pounds
Design: Short Integrated Campy headset, Mid BB, HA 74.5 deg, SA 71deg, 21TT, RE.13.65inches, BB height 11.5 inches
Extras: Downtube gusset, logo seatstay bridge detail, All new models will have headset 3d lasercut badge. Choice between no brakes or U-brakes.

The frame was built up to try out at the race track in a months time. I will ride this frame in the 25&over class at the Alrode Grand nationals.

Velokhaya BMX

Salvo sold 6 frames to Velokhaya bmx club in Khayalitsha earlier this month. They had tons of AL race bikes given to them some years back and now there are only five or so left. They are all cracked and beaten to death. The track is very bumpy and the bikes were gradually killed off one by one by the riders improving everyday. We already gave Bayanda Ghanyaza a frame and today we handed over another Salvo First Fire to Anita Zenani.
Anita will travel to Coppenhagen, Denmark and compete in the world championships early in August. We are sure that the Salvo will treat her well and take anything the track will dish out. Good luck Anita!

Time to update everybody on what has been going down and what is to come over the next couple of weeks in Salvo country.

Good Stuff:

Salvo have been getting really good coverage in the local Bicycle publications, and all the hype is focused around our Fixie frames that we are building at the moment. We are currently busy with another run of 10 frames in two sizes, and they should be available soon, so be on the lookout.
We are glad to say that we have no more stock of frames left, and have cleared the initial batch that was made, and we are looking forward to the new batch that we have received the materials for.
Youngster Felix Murray Shum have joined our am team, and we are really exited to invest in youngsters like him.
We are currently designing and building a new freestyle frame in conjunction with Wayne Reiche, and the levels of amptness is off the radar as this will be a step up in levels of what we have been doing up till now. We will produce just 4 frames in the first batch and 2 has been taken so 2 left if you want to be part of this awesome project.
Some edits coming soon from team riders, so look out for those!
We have some new clothing items including Caps & Beanies as well as nice new T's so get yours while it's fresh at Hello Again in Long Street, or at Fittees in Salt River, or just hit us up online and we'll get it to you!
Salvo goodness have been spreading and can be spotted underneath Godfrey Buziba, who raced on a Salvo Rapid Fire in the Elite class at the Nationals last weekend, and making the main on the Sunday as well.......good on ya Goddars!

Dave's Skatelab Comp Report

Howsit Guys, this last weekend we all went up for the Skatelab comp in George, with a pretty big PE crew of about 15 riders and met up with the locals. The park was super fun as always, and the level of riding was impressive especially from the PE youngsters.

The weather was a bit dodgy the whole weekend with the rain lurking around but it dried up on the saturday after a fair amount of sweeping, so we could get the comp under way. The riding in the comp was really good, and guys really put down some solid runs. Amateur results were 1st ? , 2nd Brian Greenwood and 3rd Cain Rockman.

In the advanced class guys like Brad and Matthew had very good runs, aswell as Roscoe, but in the end Stuart Laing came 3rd, Josh Bendamin 2nd and then I managed to put the Salvo on top. Just a quick word on Josh Bendamin who is one of those youngsters who everyone is gonna hear more of in the future, as he just seems to have more raw talent on a bike than anyone else out there, definitely need to watch out for him. Unfortunately I don't have many pics from the event but have included these to give you guys some idea, so hopefully they will do the trick!

We definately need to get more of the Cape Town riders down next year, as this is one of the funnest events, there's a camp site just across the road where plenty of good times go down afterwards.

Damn this Cape Town weather sometimes gives me the creeps, but what can you do the vibe, people and geography makes that the pros outweigh the cons every time, and besides this is trails country so you just have to shut up and ride. When we rocked up on Saturday afternoon the wind was pushing, but funnily enough the lines was sort off protected from the strong gusts and the guys duly obliged and started shredding it up, first on the smaller right line over the hip and gradually moving to the middle and big left line.
The intensity built up over the session and the guys started riding harder and what fun it was as everybody started to get more and more comfortable. In the end Jason Hood went for some off the hook 720 attempts till his body couldn't take the abuse any longer, while Werner Mathee rode so well all day eventually winning a Salvo Frame for his effort of 5 consecutive 3's on the big left line.....insane! Wayne Reiche put in his usual bit ending up in a flair off with the flu-laden David Rigby.......well Dave only did one ride the whole day and that was when he put his helmet on and flaired the dirt spine like he was riding it for half and hour already. Other riders putting it down included Blaze Balantine, Rudy Erasmus, Carl and Lawrence, Jodie Mans (insane riding on a racing cruiser), Neill vd Merwe and the local guys off course and on that topic a special thanks to Baker for getting this place in shape like he did it was really great as well as Ryan from Monster for the support, this would not be possible without guys like these people.

Dirtopia-2011 Report

Dirtopia this year was fun overall. The jumps were hard thanks to the weather the previous days. You guys out there do not have an idea of what it takes to put on an event like this. Thanks to the Dirtopia organizers and no thanks to all the moaners who could not ride the course.

Salvo Trails Jam at Camos

On the 7th of May we will host the "100% Trails Jam" at the legendary Camos Muizenberg. This is the first of 3 events that will go down this winter. It will be very different from the past KOD type of events. The "100%" jam is open for anyone to win. You don't have to have the sickest or the most tricks to win this comp. You just need to give it 100%. So whoever rides at their own max will win the prize. Our prizes include parts from Salvo as well as a frame to the winner. There will also be extra prizes from some of the co-sponsors. Riders will be judged on style, flow and completed runs. There are jumps for different skill levels. Beginner- Expert and PRO. Cape Town is trails country so we hope to see all the local shredders present. The competition part of the event will be run between 1 and 2 pm so don't be late if you want to compete or see the action go down. See you there. Toby(Salvo TM)

Salvo race team needs some of this man's spin.

Salvo setup shop at 1st BMX racing Nationals of the year. It was hosted by the new Kempton park bmx track. We sold Salvo goods and Giant bicycles merchandise. We made and remade some friendships with the new and old school of the local racing scene. The Elite class was on fire with some hardcore racing indeed. This level of racing is very tough as Darryn would tell you. All the riders in there are quick and tough as nails. There is a new class this year at the Nationals. It's the 25 and over 20 inch class. There was a full gate of riders. It feels as if this class is going to be a very popular class this year. I think the next national should have two full gates.

Salvo Racing Team of to the SA Champs

So the Nationals Champs is happening this coming weekend in Jo-Burg, and the team have been really hard at work to get ready to make sure that the results will be there this year. Darryn Stow will be racing Elites this year and along with Chris Nixon and Rika Olivier we are set to have a full go. We will also be looking to pick up a younger Expert rider to come on board to strengthen the team. In addition we are going up with a full setup as well as a Demo Bike that guys would be able to take for a ride around the track. Can't wait for the weekend and we will keep you posted throughout.

Malcolm's Salvo MP signature Frame

A little more than a year ago we started testing the first prototype MP frame for Malcolm Peters, and after some serious thrashing at the hands of Moe, James Brawn, Brad Illingworth and David Rigby, we are happy to send them out into the wild.

The MP is intended for freestyle use and flexible enough to handle Trails, Park and Street riding, being strong enough yet light and very tight. Moe tweaked the original design to dial it in perfectly, and anyone who have seen this guy shred will realise that he knows what is needed to make up a great ride. I chatted to Malcolm a short while back and he was trying to explain to me how much easier it was to perform his stunts on the new frame allowing him the freedom to experiment with more stuff.

Salvo Fixie at the Argus

Salvo friend Christof Meyer from Bloem, rode our Fixie prototype bike in the Argus. He suffered as he climbed the uphills with hard gearing. He had a flat tyre too. Overall he had great fun and a lot of people asked him about the Salvo. We will hopefully get some photos off him soon.

As some of you know we are planning a road trip in the next month or two, and we will hit a couple of small towns around Cape Town and see what we can find to ride, while having a blast filming and just chillin. The inspiration for this came during December when I was on holiday in Hermanus and I hooked up with my nephew Neill, to go see what spots was in town, and what we found was fantastic, so we can't wait to go back and get more of this.

Hi everybody, great to be back and really looking forward to 2011 and wish everyone the best for the new year. Just a couple of point that I want to highlight and talk about for the year so that you can make a mark it in your Blackberry, PC, diary or on the bedroom wall.

Ultimate X is coming up on the 19th of Feb and we will be attending and showing off our 2011 goodies so be sure not to miss this awesome event.
Salvo will be hosting a freestyle series this year, consisting of 4 events scheduled over the course of the year and at this stage we are busy with the planning but should have details in the near future.
We will be doing a Road Trip this year and really looking forward to this looseness haha.
The racing team will be attending the 3 legs of the National Championship as well as the International Supercross event where Darron Stow will be racing in the Elite class on his fresh new Salvo "Rapid Fire"
Don't forget the Halloween Jam!!
We will check out the Ghetto Jam as well so Hank be ready.
Salvo products will be stocked in retail outlets in 2011 and we will expand our quality range of product to fit around your needs.

The Salvo gang had a session at Bel Aire on Sunday afternoon and although it was evident that recovery from over sized Christmas lunches was still taking place, fun was had in bucket loads. The afternoon started off slowly with a nasty wind gusting at times to make the big line really difficult, but Toby went for it a couple of times and vowed to return to finish the job on a day with less wind, so the trick line got the most attention, with Neill and Toby getting hotter as the afternoon got longer. Quick word about Neill van der Merwe, this guy is progressing all the time and was pulling some awesome stuff, and at 16 still has a long way to go, but watch out in the next couple of years, and oh yea he's family of course haha.

Riggers has been riding real good of late and he took a first at the Salvo UCT comp and a second at the OSP Halloween Jam earlier this year, and every time he's turned up at a comp or jam he's managed to add something new to his riding and that is what you call progress! Busy with his B-Com degree at the University of Stellenbosch, we managed to hook him up with a Salvo MP earlier this year, and we are way amped to see where this dude's going, and a better ambassador for BMX you won't find.

Gavin Lubbe ABA Grands report

Gavin Lubbe is one cool guy, always willing to have a chat and answer some q's thrown at him, and I chatted to him on FB earlier this evening and he was kind enough to agree on sending through his ABA Grands report that happened last weekend. For those of you that don't know Gavin has been living the dream in the US racing the ABA and NBL circuits and he is just getting better, so expect great things from this dude in the near future.

ABA Grand’s

I flew out Wednesday morning, Flew into some bad weather and a snow storm so ended up getting to the hotel at 2am. Got a few hours of sleep and headed to the track for some practice.
Track was good. Had a wide open first straight for some horsepower and a technical pro-section and berm jump into a long rhythm straight. First practice went well, felt really good so I was looking forward to the weekend. Friday I raced A pro to get the final move up money for AA. I made my way to the main event. Had a late gate but made up for it and took home the holeshot award. Had a good race but ended up 2nd at the line. That gave me the money to turn AA.

Saturday saw me officially turn AA pro.
Moto1 I got 5th
Moto2 had a good race and 1st

Sunday we rode round 3 and all the qualifiers
Moto3 I got 5th
That made me qualify out of motos to the 1/4 finals. Had a super stacked 1/4 and had to come from the outside. Had a late gate but made up for it. Someone in turn 1 blew up and caused a chain reaction putting me in 5th. I made a move in turn 2 and got the 4th.
Semi I had lane 7 and pulled a 4th out and transferred to the main. In my first official AA Pro race I made the main.
Main1 Had a good snap but ended up snapping my chain on the 2nd crank
Main2 got 6th
Main3 got 7thn

Pro Cruiser had a solid first straight and ended up 2nd

Overall I had a solid weekend, making all 3 mains of the weekend.

2010 Gum Trails, Halloween Jam Report

Gum Trails in Durbanville is so much a part of the Cape Town BMX culture that one almost can't picture the scene without the place, and we want to salute Wayne Reiche for keeping it together all these years and providing the spot for the annual Halloween Jam.

This year was just sooo hot, and the action was furious as riders from across the country gathered to jam the day away under clear sunny skies, but unfortunately the wind didn't play along and was blowing quite strong during periods in the day. Speaking to some of the riders they said that it was unpredictable and that a strong mind was a big asset alongside a bag full off tricks, and tricks you had to have otherwise you needn't bothered, because it was thrown down and nothing was left on the line.

When the dust settled Greg Illingworth emerged as the winner with some insane 3's, flips and whips at ridiculous heights, the guy is truly world class. Second was local rider David Rigsby and he also produced the goods when it mattered, but what stood out form him was that he completed the line tricking all the jumps on a couple of occasions, something the other guys found hard to match. Stuart Loudon from Durbs came in 3rd and took a bit of time to get going, but once he did it was all good.

The Dirt Quater comp was really good as well and again Greg simply threw it down with some sickly high airs, just pressing the accelerator to the max. Jason Hood took best trick for doing a flip transfer.

Special thanks must be made to OSP, Monster and The Riot for putting on such a show, we are really inspired and cannot wait for next year when I am sure it will be even bigger and better, the scene is alive!

Just finished my first ride on the new Salvo Race Frame last night, and man I couldn't be happier, I'm still sitting with a smile on my face 8 hours later. The frame is an out and out racer, super light (3.9lbs), but strong in all the right areas, and super stiff so that I could lay down the power immediately.......took me about 5 cranks to max out my RPM's running 44/16, so minimal power leakage there. From my limited time on the bike it felt like a real low centre of gravity which aids stability and the steering was precise (74deg) but not suicidal he he.

Will have to take it out on the dirt before I can really make an accurate assessment, but for now I will just keep smiling! GVD

Salvo Jam Action!

Great weather, awesome riding, cool turnout and a fantastic setting was the ingredients for a fantastic afternoon of dirt bicycle pleasure, and judging by the feedback from the folk we need to do this more often, and so we shall. It was Salvo's first event of such nature, and quite a learning experience, and now we know what we need to do to host some mega gigs in future, but none would be possible without the peeps and we want to thank everybody who contributed to make this an awesome day!

The format was more of a jam than a comp, but there was a competition none the less and the day started with some dual racing and the guys gave it their all with some elbow to elbow action in some of the races.

This was followed by some propa dirt jumpin and from the get go there were plenty on display including flips, whips (doubles as well), threes (all kinds off), trucks, supermans and the list goes on.........so much madness in one place, simply awesome.

Can't wait for Saturday cause it is time for the Salvo Race & Dirt Jam 2pm, at UCT and the action is gonna be epic. So far there have been a lot off good response and the team riders can't wait for the event and I had promises made to me that some Freestylers will fit brakes and run the races as well so it's bound to be insane!!

Race action kicks of at 2pm and is followed by the Dirt Jam, so remember your helmets, come early, and bring your A game cause you'll need it.

Salvo Brand Launch

Time flies when you're having fun or so they say, and it seems only recently that we decided to actually attempt the build of our first frame, and I emphasise build cause I think the decision to build a frame was actually taken about twenty or so years ago.

Things have moved rapidly since the first proto saw daylight, and now we have three different models, some parts, clothing and four team riders, so lets stop to reflect.........naw no time for that, got to move to the next thing in line.

Anyways the launch went off great and we managed to display what we wanted to, plus the turnout throughout was really good, so big up to all of you who made an effort to come out and support us, and special mention to Grant Dekker for flying in from KZN to surprise his buddies, we really appreciate it man. We had a fun ride through the city and stopped along the way to see some street action Savage and co. and what a site is Darryn on a fixie haha (we were waiting for the horse to chuck him), and Wayne Reiche on a road bike thought he was doing the tour.......ridiculously cool! but seriously to see everyone appreciating just being able to ride a bike was great to see, and that is what this brand is all about, the spirit of riding through the past three decades.

Post Weld Heat Treating (PWHT)......your education starts here!

One Problem With Welding (HAZ)

What changed when Odyssey introduced 41 Thermal? Aside from finally focusing on the quality of their components, and backing them up with easy customer service, they started to heat treat their welded componentsafter welding.

The issue with welding

Although there is extra material when you weld two components together, the biggest detriment is the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ). The area immediately around the weld becomes stiffer and less ductile. These properties lead to more propensity to crack. Take a look at cracks, and you'll find many of them occur around welds (cracks in welds are always a manufacturing defect, usually arising from voids in the weld).

Gussets

This is a problem that has plagued bicycles since we switched from lugged and brazed frames to welded. Gussets are one attempt at fixing it. The idea is that welding a plate effectively moves the HAZ farther down the tube, reducing the likely hood to crack. However, this adds a thick plate, and welds to the structure, leaving us with a heavier component. And let's face it, gussets are just not an elegant solution (take a look at the cool design/gusset below. Reminds me of lugged steel road frames).

Internal Gussets

Internal gussets are NOT gussets. They are a type of offset butting. Although a good idea (because it places material where it can most effectively support the loads encountered), these do not move the HAZ. You may be able to argue the added thickness slightly shrinks the HAZ, it does not significantly affect it.

Heat Treated Tubing

Tube manufacturers, like True Temper, Sanko, etc, will heat treat their tubesets after extrusion to optimize their mechanical properties. However, this heat treating is altered in the HAZ. Farther down the tube, where the material is no heated significantly, the mechanical properties introduced by heat treating still stands. Does using heat treated tubes reduce cracking? Hesitently, yes, heat treated tubes MAY help to reduce cracking, but cannot make significant changes to the HAZ.

So what do we do?

Post Weld Heat Treating works to relieve the HAZ. The irregular shape of the weld remains, but the brittleness of the surrounding tubes can be significantly reduced. This simple step is often overlooked because it usually requires shipping the component off, or adding machines to the shop. But it is worth it. Take a look at Odyssey's post weld heat treating and how it has brought that company (along with a better business model) to great status in BMX.

So the next time you see a company bragging about 4Q Baked, 420 Baked, or these other marketing ploys (including 41 thermal, but they actually did it right), see if there is an alternative from a company telling you something meaningful: post weld heat treatment. Luckily, more an more frames are going this direction. We can only hope to see the same from Bars, cranks, forks, etc...

Grand Nationals Team Results

Salvo/Fittees came 5th overall out of 16 teams who entered. Thank you to team riders Darryn Stow, Stefan Garlicki and Rika Oliver for raking in points here. Not too shabby for a team in it's 1st year of racing. We are now waiting for the year end standings. People in the racing scene better watch out for us from the dirty south. Salvo Grand Nationals Race Report

This past weekend saw the running of the Grand Nationals on the Saturday and the SA Championships event on the Sunday and Salvo attended with Daron Stow (25 over Cruiser), Stephan Garlichi (18 over Expert) and Toby (TM).

Grant Dekkers team sported Salvo branding on all the bikes and they looked good too

Things went really well and Darryn picked up and bronze and gold medal in cruiser on the Saturday and it looks like he will end the year with the SA#2 which is fantastic for him and the team. This is where it gets scary though because Toby decided that for the SA champs on Sunday that Darryn should race 20" on Toby's bike since Darryn only had a cruiser at the race, and he had about 15mins on the bike to get himself accustomed to it, and then blew red hot to get a bronze medal in a stacked 18 & over Expert class, just unbelievable!
Garlichi had a bad weekend by his own high standards and was complaining of fatigue and that he couldn't get the legs to work and we all know that feeling, so chin up boy and there is now next year to focus on.

Salvo at PMB Grand Nationals this weekend

Team Salvo will be attending the South African Grand Nationals this weekend and some serious silverware and SA numbers are on the line. The team consisting of Toby (Team Manager / 18 & over expert), Daron Stow (25 & over Cruiser) and Stephan Garlichi (18 & over expert) will be hoping to make it a good weekend and end off Salvo's first year on a high.
Unfortunately Chris Nixon won't make it due to some prior commitments and I am sure there are some guys blowing a sigh of relief that he isn't there.
Best of luck guys and we know you will make us proud as we build further on this fantastic adventure and know that each one of you play a major part in making it a huge success. GVD

We are screen printing a small run of A3 posters at I love screen printing. You can just steal one off a wall or window somewhere or you can be a good guy and buy a crisp and fresh one for R25 at our launch party on the 8th of October. The Salvo Bikes launch will take place at Hello Again shop on 223 Longstreet, Cape Town cbd. We want a Critical Mass style ride through town to Seapoint and back to Long str again. Let us see how big we can unite all the bmx community at one place. We will have Salvo complete bikes on display as well as our new stock frames which will be available for sale. Winter in Cape Town means a lot of jumping spots are being built / rebuilt or groomed for jams and sessions all over the western cape. One of these spots is Bellair near Somerset West. These trails have easy trick jumps as well as big and burly technical jumps. I took some photos with my old aim n shooter and captured some good stuff. Check out UCT, Soetvlei, Bellair, and I am sure there will be some jams(Halloween?) at Gumtrails this year again.

Teagan O'Keefe the fastest blond on a BMX in SA just missed out on a medal at the Youth Olympics yesterday although by reports she was quite dominant in the moto's and knock out rounds. Better luck next time. GvD

In her three semi-finals rides earlier in the day, O'Keeffe, had returns of second, third and first, her fastest being a 38.019.

O'Keeffe's male counterpart, Lunga Mkhize didn't fare as well in the boys' BMX preliminaries, his ride of 35.189 seeing him place 20th of the 32 riders"

Salvo's new MP frame is being put through it's paces at the moment, and Malcolm and James have been ripping up a storm, and reports from them have been very positive so far, and the only missing link at the moment is the new graphics, and maybe we should ask you guys out there to give us some ideas because it is kinda blank at the moment, but anycases we will come up with the right stuff by deadline.

Thanks must go out to Eric Palmer for the most amaizing shots.......you rock dude!!

Speaking of deadline we have quite a few here at Salvo, one being the official launch of the brand and a bit of a party hey.........but seriously date for it will be set in the next week so check back to see when.

On the parts front we have completed a first run of stems and we will post pics over the weekend and these babies will be available from next week.

Our material from the states have also arrived for the new range of 4130 Chromoly sprockets and these will be hitting the shelves early next month so put away those tenners in the slotted tin cause you gonna want one......consider yourself warned!!

We are getting ready for the Grand Nationals in Pietermaritzburg, and the team is looking sharp with SA numbers on the line.

Congratulations to Chris Nixon for getting WORLD 7! , Chris we know you are disappointed but we are very proud of you, keep it up.

Malcolm has finished setting up his bike and have started testing it and by his account it is going great and this is what he had to say after his first impressions "It rides pretty well, feels really light in the air and really easy to do tricks on"

More World Champs Action from PMB

Racing was great, Maris Strombergs is a machine and props to Skizo for getting the silver when he nearly went out in the semi's. We had loads of fun but in the end the pictures say a thousand words.

8m high starting hill, the guys were hitting over 60 km/h at the bottom of it, but this berm jump was just a monster and got into the heads of quite a few guys. That's Conor Fields leading the Junior Men Elites over it.

BMX World Champioships Pietermaritzburg 2010 - Report 1

Before I go on with this post I really hope the guys in this race are ok. It was the worst accident the whole weekend. BMX is dangerous. The junior elite men cruiser guys are hardcore and this following video is proof of this.

Chris Nixon did Salvo/Fittees proud by scoring one of

of 37 world numbers for South Africa.

Rika Olivier also did an amazing job and made it to the

podium with a world no.3 title. Big Congrats.

The 2010 BMX World Championships was an amazing event and props to local organizers for pulling it all off. Our Salvo/Fittees team did well for their first go at the world champs. Stefan Garlicki made it out of the motos and into the quarter finals. Darryn Stow raced hard all day with a debilitating cold. He could not transfer to the mains but raced all out to the last crank. Chris Nixon was looking very good through the motos and semi-finals. When the gate went down in the main he hit the gate and pulled off chasing an already manic pack of 40-45 cruiser racers. He scored a world no7. Not bad for his first time either.

Many other SA riders did great work this weekend and some favorites fell out and other under rated riders did surprisingly well in Pietermaritzburg. We had our prototype race/trails bike at the BMX direct pro shop on display. We also showed off a first sneak peak of our sprocket. Go to the BMX Direct website for some pics and leave a comment.

When we were at the old school riders social on Friday night we also got to speak to Patrick Morewood about all kinds of tech that Gerrie could wrap his brain around. We also saw loads of photos of when we raced in the 80s. There were many old faces that you had to connect with names you were so familiar with back then. Thanks Mrs Steer for organizing it all.

Also, a huge thank you for Grant Dekker for taking care of our Salvo/Fittees team for the week preceding the race. It's guys like yourself that one can always rely on for getting the job done.

It was a great event SA has seen with so much coverage in the local media. I hope more and more kids will now want to go get a BMX bike and find a track to ride. TM

Chris Austin takes on the pro line

During Fridays practice and time trials, there was total carnage caused by the pro line, as so many riders couldn't even make it through on their own, and we looked at each other thinking how the hell was this going to go down the next day when there would be 8 riders gunning for a space hardly big enough for two.

Chris Austin, a junior elite rider from South Africa, commited for the berm jump after casing the first two doubles and totally blew up with the result being that his bike is now in two pieces........scary when it went down, but luckily he was not injured.....can't say the same for the aluminium DK frame though.

Malcolm Peters Proto handover

Last night saw the handover of the new MP prototype frames to Malcolm and James, and by the looks on the boys faces, it was a well waited affair that finally arrived, and the guys were fully amped. The MP is intended for Trails, park as well as street and over the next couple of months will be tested by these guys to make sure they hold up to the abuse handed out, afterwards we will asses make tweaks if necessary and bang them out.

Alrode bmx nationals

Last weekend saw the 6th,7th and 8th legs of the National bmx racing series go down inAlrode. It was the last national race before the World Championships in Pietermaritzburg which meant alot of racers were taking this race very seriously. The track was redesigned completely and it was a welcome change from the old layout which has been around since the 80s. The pro section was the best design I have seen since I started racing again last year. It was a welcome change seeing most of the elite field getting through the jumps and not just the front 3 dudes. Team Salvo Fittees did a very good job at this race. Stefan made 2 out of 3 finals and got 6th places in both. "The kid" will start winning medals very soon. Darryn won 2 silver medals. We are sure by the last national this year that he will win a gold medal. Chris Nixon on the other hand did an incredible job by not losing one race this whole weekend. It was like Deja vu from the eighties where for a whole year he would get full points 200 200 200. This guy is by far the best older racer on the gate who can hold his own with the younger faster classes. There was a cruiser challenge race after the finals where he raced against the best of the 16-29 and 30-39 cruiser classes. He totally smoked them out the gate only to be outclassed by Shane Coulthard and scored a 2nd place. Thanks for the good work and scoring the big points for Salvo Fittees. Our riders are not so fortunate to have proper race tracks in Cape Town which means we are actually doing incredibly well against riders who have loads of experience racing on fast smooth tracks. Thanks to Chris, Darryn and Stefan for being the best team members ever. TM
